Packaging Film Cost per Package Calculator

Estimate net and loss-adjusted film mass and material cost per finished package from web format, caliper, lanes, density, and a supplier price. Loss basis must be selected: an extra allowance relative to net film uses net × (1 + allowance); loss as a fraction of gross input uses net ÷ (1 − loss). Density accepts lb/ft³ or g/cm³ and is normalized to lb/ft³. This estimates film material only, not print, freight, conversion, core, or other packaging charges.

Example values are prefilled to demonstrate the calculation. Replace them with values for your product, package, equipment, and operating conditions.

Inputs

Web, material, and quote

Range: at least 0 in

Enter full unfolded substrate width across the web for one repeat, in inches. For centerfold film measured as a folded half-width, enter twice that width; do not use the width of the folded roll.

Range: at least 0 in

Enter the cut length or repeat pitch in inches.

Range: at least 0 mil

Enter total material thickness in mils.

Range: at least 0 lanes

Enter the whole number of packages produced across the web for one repeat. This calculation assumes one package per lane per repeat.

Choose the unit on the material specification. lb/ft³ is selected by default; The unit is preselected as an example; no material density value is prefilled. NIST conversion factors are used for g/cm³.

Range: at least 0 selected unit

Enter the supplier/specification value for the full film structure. For a laminate, use effective composite density, not a generic resin value.

Range: at least 0 USD/lb

Enter the quoted material price in USD per pound.

Select how the supplier or plant defines the percentage. The two definitions use different gross-up formulas.

Range: 0–1 0–1

Enter 5% as 0.05. Under extra allowance, 0.05 means add 5% of net need. Under input loss, it means 5% of gross input is lost. Must be from 0 to 1; The prefilled rate is illustrative only, not a benchmark; use the actual rate for the selected scope.
