Packaging Roll Film Weight Calculator

Estimate net film-only roll mass from web width, roll length, total caliper, and user-supplied material density. Formula: volume (ft³) = width (in) × length (ft) × caliper (mil) / 144,000; net film weight (lb) = volume × density (lb/ft³). Density may be entered in lb/ft³ or g/cm³ and is normalized using NIST conversion factors. Use supplier/specification density for the actual structure; the result excludes core, labels, packaging, and other roll components. Reference: NIST SP 811, Appendix B, density conversion factors, https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/Legacy/SP/nistspecialpublication811e2008.pdf.

Example values are prefilled to demonstrate the calculation. Replace them with values for your product, package, equipment, and operating conditions.

Inputs

Roll dimensions and material density

Range: at least 0 in

Enter the film width in inches.

Range: at least 0 ft

Enter the roll length in feet.

Range: at least 0 mils

Enter film thickness in mils.

Choose the unit shown by the supplier or material specification. U.S. customary lb/ft³ is selected by default; No material density value is prefilled.

Range: at least 0 selected unit

Enter the specification density for the same film structure and unit selected above. For a laminate, use an effective composite density; do not use a generic polymer value.

Estimate scope
Net film-only weight estimate. It excludes the paper/plastic core, labels, wrap, and other packaging; variable caliper or laminate composition changes the actual mass.
