Packaging Line Staffing Requirement Calculator

Estimate concurrent direct operator positions from good package rate, summed manual work content per package, and the productive fraction available per operator. Formula: labor hours required per line operating hour = packages/min × manual seconds/package / 60; positions = ceiling(labor hours / productive fraction). Include only manual tasks that run concurrently with the line. This estimates positions during operation, not shift roster headcount, and supplies no staffing benchmark.

Example values are prefilled to demonstrate the calculation. Replace them with values for your product, package, equipment, and operating conditions.

Inputs

Line rate, manual work, and operator availability

Range: at least 0 packages/min

Use sustained good packages/minute for the same product/package as the manual work-content input.

Range: at least 0 sec/package

Sum hands-on manual seconds per package for the work being sized. Include tasks that overlap the operating line interval; do not enter a full shift or setup duration here.

Range: 0–1 0–1

Enter the positive share of each operator's line time available for these tasks, up to 1. This is a user assumption, not a labor standard.
